Colonial Bindery

Ramon trained as a bookbinder under the Master and Journeymen Bookbinders at Colonial Williamsburg in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After leaving Colonial Williamsburg, he continued making new books and repairing books for family and friends. In 2012, Ramon started Colonial Bindery where he led workshops and repaired old books. In 2014, Ramon partnered with Historic Sugartown to offer workshops in its traditional Bindery. Today, Ramon teaches a variety of workshops and classes to all ages.

Elaine's relationship with history began with a fascination of ancient history, and she's always had a soft spot for the 18th century and the beginnings of the USA. In her spare time, she loves creating and enjoys both reading and making books.

Owner of Bristol Books & Bindery in Bristol, Pennsylvania and looking for something special to add to her bookstore services, Elaine found Ramon’s classes in February of 2021. She has been apprenticing under Ramon ever since as a Journeywoman Bookbinder. For a few years, she assisted Ramon in teaching Colonial Bindery’s bookbinding classes at Historic Sugartown.

Joseluis is a lifelong book lover and amateur Colonial Historian. He has always had an interest in colonial period craftsmanship and, after his retirement, began taking bookbinding courses at Historic Sugartown with Ramón.

"There is a sense of satisfaction in creating a book using traditional methods, but for me there is even more fulfillment in helping to restore a damaged book that is a family heirloom. Restoring such a book ensures that it will be used and cherished for years to come."

Growing up in an area rich with history, Amber has always been fond of preserving and engaging with local history. As an avid crafter, she is always trying to learn new handicrafts, especially those with historical origins. Amber began learning the art of making and repairing books from Ramon in 2025 when she joined the team at Historic Sugartown.

"I have always enjoyed historic and traditional crafts. Much of my spare time these days is spent learning new skills and tricks to try out while repairing or making a new book! Every day there is something new for me to learn. The best feeling is when a project comes together and all of the hard work finally pays off!"
